The Stanley Hotel – USA 2016

How about a good horror movie this weekend? Don’t know which one? Wait, there is one out there that turned me into a big aficionado of this movie genre…”The Shining”…I bet you have seen it before, but watch it again. There is one hotel that actually inspired Stephen King to write his book and, as it happens, I passed by “The Stanley Hotel” last October. And if you, as I did, wander the floors at 2am or get out, watch it and just listen to the house, you will have no problem following Mr. King’s imagination some thirty years ago.

Needless to say, everything orbits around “The Shining”: Turn on the room TV and you will be able to watch the movie for free (which I did 2 times in one night), go for a morning coffee and cigs and watch people taking selfies with a Jack Nicholson double right in front of the main entrance or book “The Shining” tour (which we didn’t) and get inspired by the stories of haunted floors and rooms. In any case, go there if you can, take a room for the night and enjoy some history. The small town below the hotel, Estes Park, is a lovely mountain retreat right at the entrance to Rocky Mountains National Park. Take some time as the elevation is significant and, coming from Denver, altitude sickness sets in quickly. Drink lots of fluids…relax…and don’t forget to bring the axe…just in case that Johnny is home…Tata…
