Old Bridge // Mostar

Old Bridge - Mostar

Old Bridge – Mostar

Certainly, this bridge has become a symbol of war in the former yugoslavian countries, especially of the war in Bosnia-Hercegovina. I was a child when war broke out but I still vividly remember media coverage on the destruction of the bridge connecting the croatian-catholic and bosniac-muslim parts of Mostar by croat armed forces. Fortunately, the bridge has been reconstructed about ten years ago and, today, continues to remind us all how fragile peace can be in Europe.

On a more personal note, I strongly recommend visiting this part of the balkans at least once (although, for obvious reasons, I prefer coastal Croatia, see here and here…or coastal-whatever for that matter). This is the land of meat…and more meat…and then some extra-meat! If you, as I do, looooooooove eating good-to-great meat, this is the place to be. You will probably not get much better meat than on the balkans…seriously…I am drooling…

Try to go with a car, if you can organize one, from here to Sarajevo. The drive up there is dramatic and fascinating as there is no highway, just a one-lane road through the mountains. Take care, drivers there are among the craziest I have encountered so far and government vehicles (of the 100-something ministeries!!!) are constantly passing by in maneuvers which can only be considered crazy. Apart from that…enjoy the food, the people and the history of this region…Tata!
